BHSOH is a K-12 school for 300 children of migrant workers living in poor conditions in a farming and factory district outside Mae Sot.

How It Started -

BHSOH was created in 1999 by U Khaing Oo Maung, a Burmese high school principal who, in 1988, left his home in Rangoon to follow his students into the jungle, where they fled to avoid the Military Regime’s attack against the people. His commitment to democracy and his love for his students is reflected in the atmosphere at the school, and in the success of its graduates.

"I had been a high school principal in Burma before the nation-wide 1988 democracy movement rose up against the military government, led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. As a result of the severe crackdown on this movement by the military forces, I followed my students from Rangoon into the rural areas and eventually into Thailand. The purpose of BHSOH was not only to provide an educational voice in the lives of our youth but also to care for those unfortunate victims whose parents were jailed or executed by the junta’s troops."

With an ever-changing population of various ethnicities and cultures, as working families come and go, BHSOH has been able to maintain a stable and dynamic environment where students graduate with basic high school education and competence in Burmese, Thai, and English. They go on to work in the booming border economy or to take more specialized training programs.
